Fraser, J., Anderson, J., Lazuen, J., Lu, Y., Heathman, O., Brewster, N., Bedder, J. & Masson, O. (2021) Study on the future demand and supply security of nickel for electric vehicle batteries. European Commission.
There are currently several questions when it comes to both the primary supply and the establishment of a circular economy of nickel. Eight experts in nickel markets, lithium-ion battery supply-chains and the automotive sector analysed the EU’s ability to independently source and supply the required nickel resources.
The result is a global forecast that considers Europe’s place in the international context of EV transition and adoption over the next 20 years, and a fine-grained collection of policy responses that the EU could put in place. The report concludes that long-term strategic shifts must be made to address all aspects of the nickel supply chain, as high-quality Class I nickel is essential for the batteries that will drive EV adoption and cut greenhouse gas emissions.
